I See You With My Heart - Natlie and Andre

Andre and Natlie, Johannesburg North, October 2015
Natlie is a South African of Indian descent from Tongaat, a suburb of Durban. She is Christian and was raised in a conservative and religious family. Andre is a 35 year-old Afrikaans from Vereeniging, a small town in the South of Gauteng province. Christian faith has also been part of his life since he was very young. They are married and have a son. They met after Natlie decided to move to Johannesburg. Andre needed someone to travel with him and Natlie was afraid to drive in the city. Natlie’s first thoughts about Andre were very « in-the-box », as she found it suspicious that a white man needs someone to travel with him. Andre did not know what to think about her, having no Indian friend. Progressively, they got to know each other and were pleasantly surprised by their respective personalities. When they started dating, the reactions of Andre’s friends and family were mixed but the majority was shocked and not approving. For Andre, it is because, people are “brainwashed growing up” to have certain prejudices on other racial groups. Natlie’s mother was very sceptical at the beginning, thinking that Andre was an “old-school Afrikaans” who would not treat her daughter well. Now that Natlie's family got to know Andre, they love him dearly. To this day, Natlie regrets that some members of Andre’s family still don’t take her seriously and that they still got stares when they are in public together. © Miora Rajaonary
